  Three weeks ago, an unusually high instance of tent caterpillars began showing up in Apple – Crab – Flowering Cherry – Plum species. This high population most likely was due to our mild winter. Fortunately, it now appears that the late frosts that occurred after our unusually warm March dealt a serious blow to the tent caterpillar population. This is good news to all homeowners as these pests, left unsprayed, can defoliate an ornamental tree completely within weeks of their emergence. As of this writing, we are calling off our tent caterpillar spray program for this season.
